Description
Green Privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium)
Ligustrum ovalifolium trough hedging is a traditional British Hedge, is the most ubiquitous privet being seen in hedges all over the country and is one of the most commonly grown shrubs. It is also known as the oval leafed Privet. It was introduced from Japan in 1885 and is suitable for growing in a wide range of soil conditions and locations including in shade including under trees and even in areas of tree roots where nothing else will grow. In the colder areas or in poor soils and where it is more exposed to strong winds it can lose some or all of its leaves during the winter months.
If left untrimmed it will produce a white flower head followed by a black berry but if it is kept trimmed it will be very unusual to see them. With regular trimming at least 3 times per year you will get a very tight and smart hedge. It is best to trim with the top slightly narrower than the base. If trimmed this way the Green Privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium) Traditional British Hedge Plant will keep leaves all the way to the ground.
