Description
Ilex ‘Nellie R Stevens’ is a hybrid of the Common Holly (ilex aquifolium) and Ilex cornuta a species that was introduced from Asia (Notably China and Korea). Ilex ‘Nellie R Stevens’ is hardier than normal Holly. Like the normal Holly it has dark green leaves and produces red berries which are produced in more copious quantities than the straight plant the berries are also longer lasting on the plant. It is a great screening plant as it keeps its density right down to the bottom of the stem and this also makes it very good for turning into formal geometric shapes like pyramids. It is also a good plant for security as it has spikey leaves that are held close together making a hedge that is very nearly impossible to get though.
ilex ‘Nellie R Stevens’ is also very tolerant of atmospheric pollution making it great for planting in urban areas. It will also grow in most soil types but it does not like poorly drained wet soils. A good evergreen plant that will have berries in the right situation as well as adding great structure and elegance to a garden.
We only offer this with at 200cm tall and 100cm across the base and it is also grown in limited numbers due to the time it takes to train and fill out its shape.
