Description
Purple Beech (Fagus syl. Purpurea)
Fagus syl. Purpurea, often referred to as Purple Beech, is a magnificent hedge plant known for its striking deep purple leaves and vibrant red new growth in spring. While it is sometimes confused with Copper Beech due to its warm, burnished copper tones in autumn and winter, Purple Beech stands out for its rich, intense leaf colour that lasts well into the colder months.
The leaves remain on the plant throughout winter, only falling when new growth emerges in the spring, making it an excellent choice for year-round privacy and screening.
Purple Beech thrives in light to medium soils and should be planted in well-drained conditions, avoiding heavy clay and consistently wet soils. When planted in shade, the leaf color may soften, but it still offers a beautiful, muted hue. With regular trimming, Purple Beech can be shaped into a formal hedge, providing a strong structural element in the garden.
This readybag pallet of 5 units offers a convenient way to establish a dense, colourful hedge quickly, perfect for adding both beauty and privacy to your landscape.
The Royal Horticultural Society recognised its excellence with an Award of Garden Merit in 1984.
