Description
Euonymus Jean Hugues Trough
Euonymus Jean Hugues is a selected form of Euonymus japonicus, closely related to the Common Spindle Bush. This variety forms a neat, evergreen hedge that is naturally more upright and narrow compared to other Euonymus varieties, making it an excellent choice for formal garden features like knot gardens and low borders. Its adaptability and toughness allow it to thrive in all parts of the United Kingdom and across most soil types.
The leaves of Euonymus Jean Hugues are a rich forest green, tightly clustered along the stems. They are oval with small serrations, and new growth emerges in a fresh, bright green before maturing to a darker shade. While the plant can produce fragrant white flowers with four petals, regular trimming as a hedge will likely prevent flowering. If left to grow naturally, it may also develop small pink berries, though these are uncommon in well-maintained hedges.
Euonymus Jean Hugues thrives in full sun, which brings out the best in its foliage color, but it is also tolerant of full or partial shade. With a slow growth rate of 10-20 cm per year, it is easy to manage and shape, whether you want it to form a natural bush reaching up to 2 meters in height or keep it neatly trimmed at around 50-60 cm. This versatility makes Euonymus Jean Hugues a fantastic alternative to Box (Buxus sempervirens) and English Yew (Taxus baccata) for use in structured garden designs like parterres and low border edging.
