Hedge highlights for September
Our highlights for September
As I write this we are nearly at the time of the year where day and night are in balance with 12 hours of dark and 12 hours of light. That can only mean that we are fast approaching the traditional planting season for hedging. Now that we are in September and Autumn is approaching, we start to see the release of the new crops. No two years are the same, with plants becoming ready as early as mid August or as late as early October (sometimes it is even into the following year!). Over the years we have learnt to gauge exactly what height and appearance they will have and this allows us to be very accurate as to when we offer these for sale.
Each year we pick our favourite and like to highlight them. Below are our favourites for 2024 and our new crop highlights for September!
New Crop highlights for September
Mixed Native Hedging
Available in two sizes the Readyhedge trough range up to 100cm tall and the Readybag range that is up to 150-160cm tall. It is available in 5 different mixes that are designed to mimic the hedges that march their way across the British countryside.
Griselinia littoralis
This is an evergreen hedge with a slightly different colour green leaf to anything else that we grow. Best grown in coastal or urban areas. Looking at the plants this is probably the best crop of Griselinia that we have ever grown and is amazingly uniform.
Prunus lus. Angustifolia
Commonly called Portugal Laurel, this dark green leaved plant makes an amazing hedge and is so uniform it looks like it has been trimmed by a machine. This is our most popular hedge and rightly so.
Fagus sylvatica
A classic of the hedging world. With its delicate soft green leaves during the spring and its copper coloured leaves during the winter, this is the perfect hedge to give privacy and interest all year round
For something relatively new and exciting we also have
Photinia Carre Rouge
A close relative of Photinia Red Robin this evergreen hedge has great dark red colour to its new foliage. With smaller leaves than the Photinia Red Robin this hedge trims up to a gloriously dense and smart hedge. Everyone who visits the nursery is surprised at how well it looks and performs.
The above is just a snap shot of what we have available and few highlights for September! It is always worth coming to the nursery to see what we have to offer as images and words do not do justice to the range and quality of the plants we have on the nursery.
