Autumn Colour at Readyhedge

Autumn Colour

Driving in to the nursery this morning in a thick fog reminds me that autumn is definitely here, even though it has been unseasonably warm and we are still waiting for the first frosts of the year.

It is the season where plants undergo big changes. The deciduous ones start to go into hibernation, and they pull essential nutrients back into the wood to store it for a fast start in the following spring. As they pull the chlorophyl out of the leaves you start to get this amazing change in colour, with the leaves going red, orange, yellow and even purple, depending on the type of plant. This makes for some of the most stunning plant displays you will see.

Hedging plants are no different showing the same colour change. Below are some of the autumn colour favourites that we have on the nursery.

Fagus sylvatica (Green beech)

Renowned for its loverly copper coloured leaves during the winter, it also has an equally stunning Autumn colour with a rich yellow. This will show on both the hedging units and the screening panels.

Parrotia persica (Persian Iron Wood)

Only supplied as a screening panel.  This impressive plant is a nice neutral green until we get to the autumn and then when the nights draw in it explodes in a riot of colour, starting yellow and the fading into a fiery orange and nearly red.

Liquidambar ‘Worplesdon’ (Sweet Gum)

Again only supplied as screening panels this is one of the best known trees for autumn colour.  Often mistaken for an Acer, these large palmate leaves have a yellow orange colour with an overlay of pink or purple depending on the plant.  A stunning addition to any garden.

Pyrus cal. Canticleer (Ornamental Pear)

As I write these are still green and not even looking like they will change colour.  But we have seen them being one of the last plants to change its colour and then holding there colour well into November.  Holding there leaves this late into the autumn or even winter makes them a very useful plant for any scheme.

With all of these plants, the amount of autumn colour and duration will depend on the season, the location and to a degree the plant.  This, however, is what makes the display so amazing, each year it is always slightly different.
